I’m excited for another year of visiting my local theatre frequently and Hull has some great touring productions this year. Here are 8 musicals to see in Hull in 2025.
NOW THAT’S WHAT I CALL A MUSICAL
When: 4th-8th February
Until writing this article, I had no idea what the plot for the show actually was! I’m a 90s baby so maybe I’m not the best demographic but I don’t mind 80s music and with Nina Wadia and Sam Bailey at the helm of this show, it can’t be awful! Sinitta being our special guest puts me off a little but it sounds roughly similar to the storyline of The Band/Greatest Days.
THE BOOK OF MORMON
When: 4th-22nd March
This is a show that I’ve never seen because I just never thought it would be my cup of tea. I’ve heard of a few of the songs and found them to be funny and catchy. I believe Adam Bailey, who I’ve seen previously in Jersey Boys, is one of the leads so at least I know I’ll enjoy the performances.
DEAR EVAN HANSEN
When: 22nd-26th April
I’ll slightly be cheating because I saw this tour in Leeds late last year. It’s one of my favourite musical soundtracks and I listen to it pretty regularly. I’ve always been impressed with the smaller cast filling up the stage too because I think there are only like eight characters, yet their voices and stage presence sound and feel like many more. I’ll be there mostly for the vocals because the cast is outstanding.
GHOST THE MUSICAL
When: 29th April-3rd May
Another musical that I’m unfamiliar with. I’ve never seen the film (not my cup of tea) but the musical sounds a little better. I assume it will be similar to The Bodyguard, just without Whitney Houston’s music and instead a score written by The Eurhythmics. Hopefully, the audiences behave a little better!
CRUEL INTENTIONS
When: 13th-17th May
I’ve only ever seen this film once, back when I used to go to film club in secondary school. I actually thought the musical was newer than it is but it goes on tour after a successful run at The Other Palace in 2024. I’m mostly going for the soundtrack because it’s full of lots of my favourite nostalgic 90s and 00s hits. There’s a bit of a crossover with the & Juliet soundtrack though, which does surprise me!
SIX THE MUSICAL
When: 3rd-7th June
I mean, it’s my favourite musical so it had to go on the list, right? Whilst I’m super excited to see the OG queens in the cinema release, there’s nothing better than the live stage show. I’m hoping there’s a press night but because there wasn’t last time, I’ve booked a ticket for the Saturday matinee just in case.
CHICAGO
When: 30th June-5th July
It’s definitely a classic but I enjoy seeing the updated stage show every time. I’d probably say that the 2002 movie is better than the live show. However, the Fosse-inspired choreography is always a highlight for me. I’m really hoping to see Brenda Edwards as Mama Morton and Kevin Clifton as Billy Flynn too.
CALAMITY JANE
When: 22nd-26th July
One of my favourite classic movie musicals is finally going on a UK tour and with Carrie Hope Fletcher at the helm, it’s going to be amazing, isn’t it? With a classic score and Nick Winston as choreographer, I can see this being one of the best tours of the year. I’ve never seen it on stage before so I’m excited to see a modern and fresh take on the musical.
And those are the 8 musicals to see in Hull in 2025. I think there’s still some space in the calendar towards the end of the year but these are what I’ve got my eye on so far.
