I don’t know about you but I’ve been in a funk lately. After spring cleaning my life and then doing my March monthly reset a bit earlier than usual, I genuinely thought I’d moved on from it. However, I noticed that I’ve still been feeling a bit meh. That’s why I decided to change up some of my routines. The first one I always edit is my morning routine. In fact, I’ve overhauled my spring morning routine and sharing it below!
7am alarm
Because I work from home, I can realistically wake up whenever I want to. However, I find between 7am and 8am is my sweet spot to have enough sleep but be awake early enough to get more done. My pattern usually is to wake up at 7am Monday to Thursday and treat myself to an 8am lie-in on a Friday (plans permitting).
Sync FitBit
The very first thing I do when I wake up (and have nipped to the loo) is to sync my FitBit app. I track my sleep and see how it alters my mood. In general, a crap night’s sleep will mean my mood is low and I won’t get much done after lunch.
Drink water
Hydration is so important to me. I fill up my water bottle before bed so it’s ready to go the following morning. I’m not crazy for ice-cold water (sensitive teeth here) and it tends to stay cold until the morning (unless we’re in peak summertime).
Choose a playlist
Next, I grab my Bluetooth headphones, pick a playlist and turn the Internet off on my phone. I’ve been starting my days with no phone (other than the above). I try to download a playlist so I don’t have to have my Wifi on and to avoid distractions!
Gratitude list
One of my favourite parts of my spring morning routine is expressing gratitude. I’m not a religious or spiritual person but I do like to jot down what I’m grateful for. I made my own gratitude bullet journal and all I do is write down three things I’m grateful for that day and that’s it! It takes me three minutes max!
Make the bed
The first thing I do as soon as I get out of bed is to make it! I’ll fluff out the duvet, pop the cushions back on the bed from the floor, and fold up my blanket. It’s such a small task but it feels like you accomplish something so early!
Get ready for the day
I’ve lumped all of these tasks together because I do these one after the other. This section includes my skincare routine, brushing my teeth, getting dressed for the day (usually into loungewear), and putting on some make-up. I don’t wear make-up every day but I’ve started to do a basic look most weekdays.
Do some housework
One thing I try to do daily is housework. I’m not a big fan of using up my weekends purely to clean the house and do laundry. I try to do laundry, especially a couple of times a week so I’ll either load up the washing machine or clear the clothes horses/drying racks. Some days, I might vacuum or clean the kitchen a little instead.
Make a hot chocolate
I’m not a coffee or tea girlie so instead, I have a hot chocolate every morning. I got a milk frother a couple of years ago and it’s genuinely elevated my hot chocolate experience every day. I choose one of my favourite mugs (mug choice is very important) and add in some caramel or vanilla syrup. On Fridays, I’ll add marshmallows on top as an extra treat.
Make my other drink selection
I don’t know about you but I’m a three-drink person at least. Whilst I’m making my hot chocolate, I’ll refill my water bottle (or grab a new one), make myself a glass of fresh orange, and often, make some dilute orange/orange squash too. I like options! Unfortunately, I just can’t stomach food in the morning as well as being an intermittent faster (my chosen window is 12-7 to eat in), so I actually don’t eat until lunchtime.
Get my desk set up
When the rest of my routine is complete, then it’s time to sit at my desk. I have a quick routine: grab the to-do list I wrote the previous night for today, check emails and important links, update Notion/Asana, and fill out my bullet journal with any updates. Before I start my work day, I like to make sure I’m organised and prepped for everything that might come my way.
A quick workout
This is something new that I’m trying to implement. When I’m set up for the day, I want to start doing a quick workout before starting my day properly. Hopefully, it will get my blood pumping and my brain working! When I mean a quick workout, I’m talking about anything under 15 minutes that I don’t need much equipment for.
Now I’m fully ready to start my day. My spring morning routine takes less than two hours, which I know sounds very luxurious. This is a far cry from when I worked in retail and had about an hour. Even then, I’d get in a workout, get ready, and get out of the door! Bear in mind that I don’t do every item every day. Sometimes, getting ready is all I have time for!
One thing I’d love to do is read in the morning. However, reading makes me sleepy, which isn’t ideal for a morning routine! It’s a core part of my evening routine though and I’ll often read during lunch too if a book is particularly riveting!
Are you big on routines? Does my spring morning routine sound like your cup of tea or am I missing something? Let me know in a comment below or send me a DM on Instagram or Twitter.
