January was a lot and I know many of us felt a bit deflated after what felt like the longest month ever. Self-care is personal to each and every one of us so these are just a few of my thoughts. Here are my how to get out of a funk top tips.
Disclaimer: This is a post for those of you who have been feeling a bit down or have had a few off days. If you suffer from depression or anxiety (or think you might be), please speak to a specialist if you can.
Journal your feelings
Whether you write in a pretty notebook, type it up in a document, or record yourself on camera for nobody to see, getting your feelings out of your head helps. When I’m having a mental block or not feeling great, I sit and have a brain dump in my journal. It doesn’t matter if it’s a mess, I rarely go back and read them. There’s just something therapeutic about emptying your brain
Focus on your version of self-care
I say this often but self-care doesn’t have to mean taking a bath. Self-care often depends on your mood, how much time you have, and your budget. It can be anything from a good night’s sleep to fresh air, from reading to a relaxing beauty routine. When I’m having a meh day, I like to have some ‘me time’, which means being on my own, drinking lots of water, being in bed, putting my phone on Do Not Disturb and reading.
Move your body
For the past week, I’ve started a new workout routine and actually stuck to it. However, moving your body doesn’t have to mean a hard-hitting workout. It might be dancing in the kitchen, taking a yoga class, or going on a long walk in the countryside.
Create your own playlist
I’ve no idea where I read it from but getting outside of your head is the best way to create some high vibes. My favourite way of doing this is listening to upbeat music, sticking my headphones in and just doing something. My Positive Vibes playlist is full of female artists!
Find your people
When you’re in a funk, you’ll know how you get out of it. You might prefer some alone time, you might want to hang out with your bestie or partner, or you might love getting out of the house with a group of friends. Whichever it is, find the right people for the right situation. Speak to those closest to you about whatever’s going on in your mind.
Get creative
Lockdown made us discover a love of passion projects (it’s up to you to monetise or not) so let’s get back to that! Channel your energy into doing something fun and that takes your mind off. It could be knitting, sewing, playing an instrument, drawing, scrapbooking – the list goes on! Make it fun though or you’ll get stressed. If you mess up, accept it and try again!
Focus on you
One of my favourite things to do when in a funk is getting those niggly tasks done. I’ll write a to-do list of jobs, put on my comfies and get to work. Cleaning and organising is a big task that always keeps my brain empty! Whatever you need that’s high priority, now is the time to do it. Maybe you need to set up a project management tool to organise your life, or maybe you need a full pamper day! Even if it’s just an hour or two, schedule out some time just for you.
A digital detox
My final tip is to unplug. Obviously, this can depend on what your favourite activities are but if you can, try to have some time away from your devices. I usually turn off my Wifi on my phone and download a playlist. I’ll have a laptop-free day if I really need to unwind because social media and online shopping are my biggest energy drainers!
