For a while now, I have an interest in keeping fit. To me, it’s a way to de-stress after a long day at work or the perfect pick-me-up when I’ve had a rubbish day. Doing something good for my body helps my mind too! It means I can live all of my troubles at the door and concentrate on myself for a while!
Since I started taking my fitness seriously about a year ago, I had pretty much no idea about working out. I’ve always been active and have had gym memberships since I was 14 but I’ve had very limited knowledge. Over the past year or so, I’ve spent a lot of time researching about different types of workouts and equipment.

I’m a firm believer in not paying a lot of money to get fit. Doing bodyweight exercises and cardio are more than enough to get yourself fit! You don’t even have to join a gym! For me, I hate regular cardio i.e. running so I joined a gym to make the most out of the classes and use their cardio machines. I’ll admit I don’t use my gym pass every single day but I do try to move most days.

The best thing about fitness is that you can do it from the comfort of your own home. For a while now, I’ve been collating a small number of items that help me with my workouts and I wanted to share them with you all! Without further adieu, here are my workout and fitness essentials!

1. Yoga mat

I hate yoga. I find it incredibly dull but a yoga mat is a great item to have in your collection. However, they’re great for a range of other workouts; I use mine during HIIT, toning and stretching sessions. You get extra grip on them and most of them include a strap so they’re easy to carry!

2. Set of dumbbells

I won’t lie: I’m very weak. My dad actually bought me this set of dumbbells as I was struggling to find a set. They’re 1kg, 2kg and 3kg and came with the stand. They’re perfect for the toning moves I do!

3. Kettlebell
Some workouts I do require a kettlebell; mine is a 5kg one but I often substitute it for a dumbbell because like I said, I’m very weak.

4. Mini bands

Probably my favourite workout item. These are so small but so effective.

5. Resistance bands

Resistance bands have a similar effect to mini bands; creating resistance without using weights.

6. Foam roller

Perfect for rest days! I love using my foam roller a couple of times a week. It’s been great for my back too!

7. Sliders

These are a recent discovery and I can’t believe I hadn’t discovered them before now! These can be used on both carpets and hardwood/vinyl floors.

8. Journal

Keeping track of your workouts, meals, water intake, step count, vitamins and thoughts is incredibly important in the process of getting fit. It’s also amazing to look back afterwards and see how far you’ve come!

9. Water bottle

Keeping hydrated is very important! I carry a water bottle with me at all times and aim for at least 2 litres a day, if not more!

10. Fitbit
Since I got a Fitbit a couple of months ago, I’ve been obsessed with upping my step count. I aim for 10,000 steps a day, which I can easily do in a regular work day anyway! I’ve been tracking my sleep too and I need some tips to get a better night’s sleep!
