2021 was meant to be a huge year of theatre for me but alas lockdown happened. Although I did manage to see six shows, I want to get to as many as possible in 2022. That starts at home. This list of 10 musicals to see in Hull in 2022 features all musicals because they’re my biggest love. Keep reading to see what makes my list!
All shows are at Hull New Theatre.
Waitress the Musical
31st January-5th February
Waitress the Musical UK tour continues very soon and it will be my first musicals press night of 2022. I was very lucky to see Sara Bareilles and Gavin Creel during the short-lived London run just before Covid hit. It’s one of my favourite modern musicals with a great storyline and even better songs. I’ll probably have a little cry at the end too!
Mamma Mia!
8th-19th February
Whilst those who know me know that I really don’t like Abba or this show usually. It was the last press night I attended in 2020 before lockdown and it was better than expected. I have to go to it because it’s in my mum’s top three musicals of all time but I had a surprisingly good time last time. The cast were incredible so I imagine it’ll be the same again!
The Addams Family
15th-19th March
Now I am a huge fan of the film series but I have no idea what to expect from the musical! All I know is that Joanne Clifton is in the show and that’s it! I assume it follows the first movie’s plot very loosely but I’m definitely intrigued about how it will be as a musical. Some work amazingly, some don’t! I hope The Addams Family is the former, not the latter!
Six the Musical
5th-10th April
Third time’s the charm! It was postponed because of the pandemic and then rescheduled because of Covid within the company. As many of you will know, it’s become my favourite show as it’s such a feel-good one as well as educational! I might finally get to see Six in Hull and I’m beyond excited! Can you tell I’m excited? I listen to the soundtrack weekly so I know every word!
Bedknobs and Broomsticks
12th-16th April
One of my absolute favourite movies on stage is something I’ve been waiting for for years. Compared to other Disney movies, I’m surprised it’s taken this long to make into a musical stage show. I assume there will be more songs added as I don’t remember there being that many musical numbers.
Rock of Ages
19th-23rd April
If you’re looking for a musical that is full of rock hits and a storyline that’s less important, Rock of Ages could be right up your street. Is it one of the best written shows out there? No. But is it a good night watching this show with lots of catchy songs that you will know? Most definitely! I’m sure I’ll be singing the soundtrack for days afterwwards.
The Cher Show
3rd-7th May
I have to say, I’m not a huge Cher fan myself but I’ve heard nothing but great things about this musical. With direction from Arlene Phillips and Oti Mabuse’s choreography, you know that at least the dancing and staging will be incredible! We love an all-woman creative team too!
Jersey Boys
17th-28th May
It’s been a few years since I’ve seen Jersey Boys but I was there on its previous visit to Hull back in 2018. I remember it being a spectacular show but it was the script that was lacking a little. However, with jukebox musicals, it’s always the music that takes centre stage! I’ve no idea on the casting either but I’m excited to see it!
Les Miserables
15th June-9th July
Another one that’s been rescheduled multiple times and my mum’s absolute favourite musical ever. It’s been a few years since I’ve seen it in the West End as it’s pretty heavy-going. I’ll definitely be intrigued to see how the touring production takes on this classic. I assume the staging will be similar to the West End as it’s in town for 3 weeks!
Bat Out of Hell
13th-24th September
With Meatloaf’s passing, this tour seems even more poignant. Again, I’ve never seen the show so have no idea what to expect. I’m assuming it will be similar to We Will Rock You with the songs being features with dialogue splashed in. Either way, I’m looking forward to having a night out with my dad at this one!
Whilst I love a London/West End trip, there’s something so special about visiting your local theatre for various touring production. With 10 musicals to see in Hull in 2022 and so much more, here’s to a stagey New Year! I love to see as many tours as possible so expect more reviews on The English Everygirl.
