HAPPY MEAN GIRLS DAY!

Now it’s basically a rite of passage for a 90s baby to have seen Mean Girls and be obsessed with it. It’s sort of a cult film for our era and let’s face it, it’s brought us some great actresses (Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, not so much you Lindsay Lohan!). I mean it was never going to win any Oscars but it’s a fun film filled with quotes and it’s the perfect girls’ night in movie of choice! It’s probably the Lohan’s best work though and she did some great movies back in the day: The Parent Trap, Just My Luck, Freaky Friday, Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen.

As much as it is a film about a group of mean girls, there are some really important messages in there! I was just starting at an all girls’ secondary school when it came out in 2004 and I remember talking to my friends about it and how much we used to watch it at sleepovers, pretty much every weekend! Let’s take a look at some important lessons that Mean Girls taught us:

1. Be careful of how you choose your friends.

Being friendly to people is great but not everyone is kind. Nobody likes a complete bitch.

2. Don’t be afraid to be the smart girl.

Playing dumb is really stupid and if a guy doesn’t like you because you’re intelligent? He’s not the right guy for you.

3. Being popular is not the be-all and end-all.

Having a social life is important but make sure you pick quality over quantity when it comes to friendships.

4. Change is good but you have to make the change.

When someone else wants to change you or you change just to be popular, they’re not the sort of people you should be associating with. Stand out and be yourself.

5. Revenge is not a good idea.

Don’t create your own Burn Book, just let things slide.

6. The rules of feminism should always be adhered.

Slut-shaming and going out with your best friend’s exes is not cool.

7. Double check the dress code for a party.

Especially if you think it’s fancy dress and it might not be.

8. Being a feminist is cool.

Being kind to others, especially other women, is fundamental. Stick up for one another.

9. Always apologise if you know you’re wrong.

Just swallow your pride and say you’re sorry. And make sure you mean it!

10. Always wear pink on Wednesdays.

No explanation needed!

So to celebrate 14 years of its release on the official Mean Girls day, it is only right with it being a Wednesday that we wear pink and spend our evening watching this classic! You could also try giving the Broadway soundtrack of the musical a listen; it is amazing! I’m really hoping for a West End transfer of it in 2020!
