With summer on the horizon, many of us want to become our best selves. However, I’m not talking about weight loss here (if you want to, you do you). For this blog post, I actually mean internally. You know when you feel like you have your shit together? That’s how we want to feel going into summer. I’ve compiled a list of a few ways on how to feel more like yourself.
Plan out a self-care day
One of my favourite ways to do on the way to feeling more like myself is to have a self-care day. This could be anything from a pamper day to a day of reading to a day of running errands. For me, it’s probably a mixture of those three and more. Often, my weekly reset routine is my form of self-care. Getting organised, cleaning, running errands, reading and some extra skincare can set me up for a new week. If I’ve had a rubbish week, I’ll do my weekly reset on a Friday so I can fully relax over the weekend. For the most part, I do it on a Sunday to set up for the week.
A self-care day can also change from week to week. One week, you might need to turn your bathroom into a spa for a few hours. The next week, it could be doing some extra housework, such as deep cleaning the kitchen. Week three could be getting out of the house for a bigger food shop or going to all the bargain shops (one of my favourite activities). The last week of the month could be a day in front of the TV. It really is up to you because self-care looks different to everything single one of us and can look different to you every week too!
Get ready properly
If you want to feel a little better, I really do find that getting ready properly is the way to go. I’m not talking about getting dressed up to the nines at all. For me, comfy clothing is the way to go so we’re talking an oversized sweatshirt, joggers, and slippers usually! However, that’s still an outfit to me.
Then I’ll go ahead and do my full skincare routine and maybe put on a little bit of makeup. My routine is very simple. Most days, I’ll just pop on some concealer and mascara. If I’m on a Zoom call, I’ll add a light foundation and maybe some eyeliner if I can be bothered. Honestly, whatever makes you feel put together is right for you.
One thing that does always make me feel better is a few spritzes of perfume or body mist. Don’t save those expensive perfumes for special occasions, make every day special! You might have a different scent for work days, relaxing days, and get-shit-done days.
Have a decluttering session
One of my favourite things to do as a hobby is to declutter. I’ve even created a list of 52 areas to declutter this year and am trying to tick off one a week. In April, I managed to declutter my makeup and toiletries collections, as well as the fridge and freezer. The idea is to focus on a small area every week (or do two a fortnight if I’m busy), instead of decluttering all in one go once a quarter. Make it as small as possible, such as your sock drawer, to get into the habit.
Feel your feelings
If you’re in a bit of a funk, getting your feelings out of your head is the best first step to take. Whether that’s writing them down, voice-memoing them, or recording a video, just feel those feelings and forget about them. This is something I prefer to do solo but if you have a close loved one, you could just have a heart-to-heart with them instead. More often than not, it just feels like a weight lifted from your shoulders and you genuinely just feel so much lighter.
Change it up
If you’ve been doing things in the same ways as always, switch it up. I actually change up my routines every season because it just feels like the right time to switch it up. For example, my spring morning routine is all about getting out of bed straight away. In winter, I like to stay in bed a little longer and read for a while. Maybe you’re usually an evening exerciser but want to make the most of lighter mornings and work out in the morning?
Stick to the bare minimum
If all else fails, just try to get the bare minimum done in terms of routine and habits. Clean your skin, drink plenty of water, eat some fruit and veggies, and tick off something on your to-do list. You all know that I’m big on routines and resets but I also have times when I just want to do the absolute minimum. That’s why I have multiple tiers to all of my routines. Sometimes, just getting out of bed and brushing your teeth can feel like a proper success!
If you’ve not been in the best place lately, I hope that this guide gives you something to focus on. Learning how to feel more like yourself is definitely personal to each of us so hopefully, you can implement small changes to feel better. Let’s just keep romanticising our lives and focusing on ourselves to really thrive this summer!
