how-to-plan-your-year-header

Now Christmas is over, it’s time to start looking ahead to 2021. I, for one, love the start of a new year as I am very big on goal-setting. I love to sit down, review the previous year and get ready for the next. Sitting down with my calendar and multiple planners usually takes me at least a day to organise! I spread everything out on my bed and colour co-ordinate my life! This time, I’m doing it a little differently because we have no idea what’s around the corner! Here’s how to plan your year 2021-style.

INITIAL BRAIN DUMP

Find some scrap paper and divide it into 12 sections (one for each month). I like to do this first because there’s nothing worse that having to Tippex stuff out before the year has even started because you’ve got the wrong date! However, you could skip straight to your planner or diary if you wish. I just like to see everything on one page to begin with!

WRITE DOWN EVERYTHING

Make a note of every single event or occasion that you have set in stone. When I did this initially, I didn’t think I had a lot going on in 2021 but then I chatted to my parents and realised I’d forgotten a lot! I’ve listed some examples below to get you started but it really is personal!

  • Birthdays
  • Work events
  • Parties/events
  • Social plans
  • Entertainment you might have tickets for
  • Holidays
  • Hobbies
  • Any kids activities
  • Anything that you have a date for!

DOUBLE CHECK ALL DATES

There’s nothing worse than having the dates incorrect for an important event. Check with family or friends and refer to any emails or social media to double check! If in doubt, ask someone!

COLOUR CODING

It’s so much easier to see stuff at a glance if it’s in colour! Add a key to the front of your diary, planner or calendar as a reference guide. Colour code by family member if you’re a household or if you’re a single gal like me, I colour code by category:

  • Bright blue – The English Everygirl
  • Purple – Content by Sian work
  • Grey – Client work
  • Dark blue – Sports events
  • Green – Planning
  • Pink – Membership events + calls
  • Orange – Social events
  • Lilac – Self care
  • Yellow – Breaks + routines
  • Red – Urgent tasks + miscellaenous

UNSURE? WRITE IN PENCIL

Especially right now, we have no idea if certain things, such as concerts, theatre and parties, will go ahead. Write them in pencil if you wish or use Tippex if needed. I prefer pencil myself but Tippex works just fine.

GO DIGITAL

If you’re not a fan of the paper planner, why not take your calendar online? I actually use Google Calendar and find planning my weeks/months/year out on there first is super helpful. You can move things around a lot easier and can edit times, categories and colours if needs be. Make sure to download the relevant app to your phone so you can refer to your calendar when out and about.

In 2021, how to plan your year is a little different to usual but that doesn’t mean you can’t make it fun! Give yourself a morning, afternoon or evening to sit down with your phone, laptop and calendar and start planning! I’ll be sharing my planning session over on Instagram this week so why not follow along on how to plan your year?
