Setting goals is something you either love or hate. For me, I’m a huge fan of the accountability. I’m someone who needs a focus and by setting goals, it gives me something to aim for. So much so that I set them annually, quarterly, monthly and weekly. The only reason I don’t set them daily is because I prefer to work from a to-do list instead.
It allows me to categorise
As someone who has lots going on, I like to be able to set a couple of goals per category. For me, these are personal blog, business, money, health + fitness and personal goals. I try not to set more than 1-2 per quarter in each category so I have an over-riding theme. Then I get to break them down into action steps, creating monthly and weekly goals as well as daily to-dos. I like to see the step by step process of how to get from where I am now to where I want to be.
It helps me to do big picture planning
I’m someone who’s always thinking about the future. In fact, I’m always trying to futureproof everything. Equally, setting goals is also about how to improve day by day. However, I want to do what I can now to be a success. Each goal I set helps me get a little bit closer to that big picture life. Whether it’s to do with my personal life, my blog or my freelance career, I’m forever wanting to better myself and work towards a better future for myself.
It gives me a sense of purpose
Goal setting gives me an idea of where I want to go and also helps to motivate me to get there. As a Capricorn and a perfectionist, I thrive on routine and ambition. Having a sense of purpose means that I’m moving the needle on every task I complete. It might just be me but I find that incredibly satisying!
It helps me to review and reflect often
Setting goals means that they also need reviewing at various stages. Because I set them weekly, monthly, quarterly and annually, it also means I review them that often too. I love reflecting on the past and looking forward to what I want to do too. It makes you really just exactly what you’ve achieved in even such a short period of time like a week!
It helps me plan where I want to go in life
My favourite part of setting goals is planning for the future. The bigger the goal, the more motivated I become. Yes, I break huge goals down but there’s something really exciting about seeing big numbers and plans and working out how to get there. I actually need to sort out my three and five year plans for the start of 2021.
