So we’re a couple of weeks into spring and it does feel like there’s been a real shift in the air. Maybe it’s the improved weather mostly! However, spring is the perfect time to not only do your deep cleaning but you can do a few tasks across your life. It might sound drastic but here’s my guide on how to spring clean your entire life.
DO THE SEASONAL WARDROBE SWITCH
This is usually the first task I do to take me from winter to spring. It’s so fun to pack away your thermals and coats and replace them with short-sleeved stuff and lighter jackets. Because the UK has such a mixed bag of weather, I tend to just pack away my proper winter stuff because I’ll still be grabbing for my long-sleeved tops and sweatshirts. It’s a great time to get rid of anything that you didn’t reach for this past autumn/winter too. Whether you sell it on Vinted or donate to charity is up to you. The general rule is to get it out of the house as soon as possible. If you don’t, you’ll be left with piles of stuff cluttering up your spaces! Don’t forget any drawers and extra closets too, whether it’s underwear, pyjamas, coats or shoes.
DECLUTTER ONE SPACE AT A TIME
Unless you’ve got a week or weekend off with nothing else to do, a full house declutter takes time, energy and LOTS of patience. Instead, break it down into smaller chunks, such as a room or even a drawer or a cupboard at a time. I always start by making of list of every area I want to declutter and then prioritise that list. I’d say decluttering is one of my favourite tasks but if you live with others, it can be hard. I’m not a hoarder but I’m also not a minimalist either. However, I want my spaces to be filled with items that I love and need. I did the whole Marie Kondo thing during Covid and it’s a great starting point but it’s okay to own things! This is the one step that always makes you feel accomplished, especially when you’re figuring out how to spring clean your entire life.
UPDATE YOUR HOME DECOR
Now you have a space with less stuff, it’s time to give it a little refresh. I love getting myself new bedding and cushions to brighten up my bedroom. Maybe you could change up your artwork and switch out any prints? I’m not into candles or flowers but they’re great to give off that spring feeling. I’m a big fan of supermarkets for home decor. They prove you don’t have to spend loads of money to have a fresh space. Hell, if you want to redecorate fully, go for it!
ORGANISE YOUR DIARY
I do this every quarter anyway (organisation is my thing) but it’s good to know what your social calendar looks like for the next couple of months. For me, I’m booking theatre trips, sporting events and beauty appointments. For you, it might be social gatherings and family time. It’s nice to see what plans you have outside of work stuff. Not only does it significantly improve your mood but you can see if you need to schedule some relaxation time around lots of social plans too! You’ll be able to see at a glance if you’re free on a certain day at a certain time as well.
SET UP YOUR BUDGET
Now your calendar is set up, you can look at your finances properly. Again, this is something I do on a weekly basis anyway. However, if you have upcoming travel or social plans, it could be best to have a sinking fund to help pay for those plans. Because I’m freelance, my pay is all over the place. However, I get paid by my main client mid-month. As soon as that money comes in, I separate it into my savings pots based on next month’s plans. For example, next month, I have lots of theatre day trips out of town so I budget a certain amount per trip and add a lump sum to my pot. I do the same for beauty appointments too because they can get pretty spendy!
REBOOT YOUR HEALTHY ROUTINES
If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ll know I love a routine. I’m a type A person, I like order and organisation and routines help me think clearly. Spring is the perfect time to look at particularly your morning routine. I tend to wake up a little earlier because the sun’s out and I try to get more fresh air during the week. I’ve got the reading bug back too so I’m trying to read every morning and night too. The only recommendation I would make is to not try to add too many new healthy habits into your routine. Add one or two, stick with them for a couple of weeks or a month and then add another. One of my favourite things to do is a healthy habits challenge. I’ve restarted 75 Soft recently to feel my best in spring and summer.
DISCOVER (OR REDISCOVER) A NEW HOBBY
Now you’ve looked at your calendar and budget, maybe you’ve got some free time every week. Spring is a great time to take up a new hobby or rediscover an old one. It could be anything from dance classes to pottery, flower arranging to running. For me, I’ve taken to journalling and scrapbooking in 2025. They’re relatively cheap hobbies, apart from the stationery every once in a while. Last year, it was all about friendship bracelets for the Eras Tour and I still have tonnes of beads! Maybe I’ll get back into it for the Busted v McFly and Five concerts I have this year.
And those are just a few ways of how to spring clean your entire life. You don’t need to make whole lifestyle changes, just edit what you already have. By all means, if you want to overhaul your life, go for it! For once, I’m hoping to stick to my own advice and use Easter Sunday to do some major decluttering!
