Someone on Instagram commented that I watch too much TV/too many films but I couldn’t disagree more. It’s a hobby of mine and most of the time, it’s just background noise. That’s why I love writing these watchlists every month. Here’s what I watched in January 2024.
DALLAS COWBOYS CHEERLEADERS: MAKING THE TEAM
SEASONS 3-4, 9-11 + 13-15 (14 x2)
This has basically been my background show for January. I’ve been recording episodes daily from MTV on the Sky+ box. I’ve seen it so many times that I now know most of their routines. It’s become a comfort show and it’s just about time it was shown on UK screens.
GREY’S ANATOMY SEASONS 1-3
Because I hate starting anything new, especially in a new year, I’m going back in with Grey’s Anatomy. I know it’s the show that has all the tears but for me, the earlier seasons especially have tonnes of funny moments! Honestly, I’ve howled with laughter frequently so far. Cristina and Bailey are my favourite characters by far. I just love strong female leads! George is my favourite male character until Sloan comes along though.
CHICAGO MED SEASON 8
I’ve finally caught up on my One Chicago shows before the new seasons start. However, I’ve not started them just yet as I’ve yet to find a decent streaming website for US TV shows. I’m mostly sad because I’ll miss Dr Halstead the most. There’s been a lot of cast turnover on both Fire and PD too but it seems like Med has the least amount of original characters left.
BIG NIGHT OF MUSICALS 2024
Musicals on primetime Saturday night telly should be a regular occurrence. They could do a scaled-back version of this production monthly in a TV studio featuring different musicals and performers every time. It would be a great way to showcase current and upcoming shows in the West End and on tour! This wasn’t my favourite year of musicals performed but nevertheless, every performance was incredible!
WONKA
Until I turned up to watch Wonka, I had no idea that this was a musical! It wasn’t the best movie I’ve ever seen but I did enjoy it. Timothee Chalamet felt like he was cast well in the role but something about him rubs me the wrong way. I know he’s meant to play a young Wonka but he still looks like a baby to me! I can’t recall any of the songs since I’ve left the cinema though so that doesn’t make a great impression.
NEXT GOAL WINS
It’s rare that I enjoy sports movies, especially football. Anything compared to Bend It Like Beckham is always bad. Next Goal Wins is based on a true story and it’s actually fairly close to it. The only problem I had was that it felt like a white saviour film and we didn’t get to explore the lives of the team’s players, more so it was just the coach. I did love the casting of non-binary actor Kaimana as a transwoman. Better still, the person they’re portraying, Jaiyah Saelua, was happy with the casting also.
ANYONE BUT YOU
Now in recent years, rom-coms or chick flicks have been practically non-existent at the cinema. Sure, they’re not Oscar-worthy films but they still belong in the cinema! Anyone But You is the start of the new rom-com era and I’m here for it. Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell have VERY good chemistry, even if Powell is too old for her. I don’t want to sound rude but they’re both like sex on a stick, especially as a duo.
ONE LIFE
Good grief, I rarely cry at movies but this one had me an emotional wreck. I loved the flashbacks between the original story from World War 2 and Sir Nicholas Winton in his 70s looking back on his life. It’s an emotional subject matter of refugee camps during the war and honestly, it felt like it could be set today considering everything that’s happening in the world right now. This film had me gripped from start to finish and I’m embarrassed to say that I’d never heard of Winton before now. The man is a real-life hero and should be more well-known. A massive selfless act of one man and those closest to him.
THE BOYS IN THE BOAT
I’d seen the trailer at many of the other screenings above but it didn’t seem to be showing at my local Odeon. Eventually, it was so I had to see it. I didn’t know a single one of the actors in this but I thought everyone did a stellar job. I’m a sucker for zeros to heroes movies and it’s yet another sports movie that I thoroughly enjoyed. The only downside is that the boys in the boat beat the British team!
And that’s what I watched in January 2024. It was a lot for one month but I didn’t have a great deal else to do! I’m definitely making the most of my Odeon Limitless pass too, seeing five films at the cinema in January,
